The 2011 Walleye opener here at the Iowa Great Lakes was a big success. Nearly 1300 people signed up for the Contest hoping to catch one of six tagged fish worth $10,000. There was, in fact, one tagged fish worth $10,000 caught this year.....but the angler who caught it had not paid the $20 entry fee to be eligible for the contest. Just sayin....the $20 donation to Easter Seals might have been worth the investment.
Water temperatures were colder this year. The first night my group from Lawton, IA only boated three Keeper fish and 8 smaller walleyes along with a 3.66 lb 19" smallmouth bass.
On Sunday morning we had much better success. All four of us limmited on Walleyes over 16" with one over 22".
We also caught several slot fish and some smaller fish that were thrown back.
Here's a photo of Don Feldhacker, his grandson Zack Reis and son-in-law Dave Reis with some beautiful Walleyes from this weekend May 7 and 8 2011
